Global Economy and Fashion Indicators

Japanese Women A recent article I read in Business Week discusses how the hair length of women in Japan has a direct correlation to the prosperity of their economy.  Basically, the thought was if the times were good then Japanese women wore their hair longer.  In times of economic troubles like the late 90’s the fashion was on the shorter side.

The article also made reference to the length of skirts here in the U.S. The idea is that in times of economic booms like the 20’s and the 60’s the skirts were shorter.

They talked about scientific data – but I am a bit skeptical in predicting the economy based on fashion.  What are your thoughts?
