Is Obama a global presidential candidate?
While many international media reporters practically swoon over the Illinois senator who is often placed in the same category as Martin Luther King – his foreign language skills are in question.
Barack Obama has an eclectic multinational family tree and this does have great appeal around the world. His father was an economics student from Nairobi, his mother a white American. They divorced when Obama was young, and his father returned to Kenya. Obama was raised by his mother until about age 10, when his maternal grandmother in Honolulu took him in.
Does Obama speak a foreign language – yes but it is Indonesian…looks like English will serve him better in most politically global situations. For what it is worth – From what I can gather, McCain does not speak a foreign language. I think it is more important to understand the high value of good foreign policy and that we are not alone in our politics than speaking several languages. However, I would like to see a multilingual candidate soon!
Do you think it is important for a presidential candidate to speak a foreign language(s)? If so, which one(s)?
